Urbanization Process Of The Tribal And The Need Prospects For Urban Development In The Sixth Scheduled Tribal Areas Of Tripura For Aligning In The Modern Livelihood Economy.

Abstract:The growth pole theory which is related to urban development is the main mechanism and themes in the subject of Regional Planning and Development. In the modern economy, the urban growth center plays an important driving force in developing any region and raising the economic status of the people by offering various and series of opportunities for the livelihood of the tribal society. In this context, the assessment of urban composition and urbanization rate of Scheduled tribes becomes the main crux of the study. The latest urban composition of the tribes of Tripura is hardly 2 % of the total population of Tripura. The extent of urbanization of the tribal societies and urban composition is extremely small as they are predominantly rural-based with their strong roots in forest economy and dependence on subsistence agriculture. The assessments on the urban composition of ST of Tripura are being compared and assessed at the level of North-East, State and Districts and in Cities and towns of Tripura to get their vivid picture in the map of urbanization. This paper has also examined the role of the State and its administrative functions of Sixth scheduled areas, regarding their initiatives being taken and the drawbacks in urbanizing of the scheduled tribes of Tripura. The general observation of the shifting trend of the tribal and their nature of embracing urban culture are being identified out. The concept of town building and policies for increasing the urbanization rate of Scheduled tribes of Tripura are being strategically discussed and explained out for the betterment of the urban welfare of the tribes.

Dongaria Kond Tribe and Higher Education; A Case Study

Abstract: There has been a growing concern over education across the globe. India is considered as leading country in terms of making legislations and taking strategic initiatives for education for its people since the onset of liberalism. Some of the fundamental reasons behind these are associated with the idea of sustainable development of human population in a competitive environment and protecting the global commons. Higher education is considered to be as a step forward for capacity building of individual and society in this regard in a knowledge driven society. This paper portraits the kind situations prevailed amongst the vulnerable Dongaria tribes in India in terms of getting access to opportunities of education particularly higher education and its implications in their socio-cultural, political and economic life. This paper claims that that the Dongaria Kond graduates have positive impression towards the system and the kind of opportunities there for higher education. Nevertheless, it establishes a contradictory unpleasant fact. On one hand Dongaria Kond graduates have positive impact on the social stability along with financial well-being of their family, however the quest for education and productive aspirations have brought some sort of disturbances in their own families caused by their movement to a distance place for education and participation in productive works on the other. The graduates sometimes crate distance from their own socio-cultural values because of their adaptive nature of behaviour they gradually develop. This paper suggests to strike a balance in terms sociocultural and economic sustainability of vulnerable groups loke Dongaria Kondh and developmental initiatives like opportunity for higher education and their effect in their own regions rather pulled by the external forces at the cost of culture and sustainable sources of livelihood.

Ethnic food habits of Reang Tribes of Tripura state, India

Abstract:The north Tripura district in Tripura state is home to Reang community, one of the 19 tribes of the region. A comprehensive field study was conducted form July 2022 to august 2023 in several villages of the district, focusing on traditional foods, their preparation and ingredients. The study revealed that the Reang community exhibits an astonishing diversity of culinary knowledge, utilizing various parts of plants in their dishes. Most of their traditional dishes are boiled and cooked without oil, fermented fish being a common ingredient. Bamboo shoots and specific species of bamboo are extensively used in their cooking. Traditional culinary practices are orally transmitted from elders to the younger generation, the decline in interest in wild foods among the younger Reangs poses a risk to the preservation of their ancestral food heritage. This abstract emphasizes the urgent need to document the current Reang culinary practices to safeguard their traditional knowledge and pass it down to future generation. Preserving their distinct food culture can contribute to the preservation of The Reangs community’s identity and heritage.

Migration Patterns of People from Rural to Urban Agartala in Tripura from 2000 to 2023

Abstract:Migration has played a pivotal role in shaping the demographic and socio-economic landscape of Tripura, particularly in its capital city, Agartala. Over the past two decades, Agartala has witnessed rapid urbanization driven primarily by rural-to-urban migration. This paper explores the key factors contributing to this migration trend, including employment opportunities, improved infrastructure, educational and healthcare facilities, and the influence of modern urban lifestyles. The expansion of service and informal sectors, establishment of government and private institutions, and enhancement in communication and transport networks have collectively transformed Agartala into an economic hub attracting rural populations. Statistical data indicate that Agartala’s population has surged by over 240% from 2000 to 2024, with migration rates rising annually between 3% and 5%. The migration is predominantly motivated by education and employment, with a growing participation of women in recent years. However, this demographic shift raises critical questions about the socio-economic balance between rural and urban areas, as wealth and resources increasingly concentrate in the capital. The study concludes that sustainable regional development policies—focusing on strengthening rural education, healthcare, and employment—are essential to manage future migration patterns and ensure equitable growth across Tripura.

Sustainable Development in Tripura’s Tribal Communities: Integrating Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Education

Abstract:Tripura, a northeastern Indian state rich in cultural and ecological diversity, is home to 19 tribal communities whose lives are deeply intertwined with the natural environment. These communities have cultivated Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) over generations, fostering sustainable living practices. However, modernization and socio-economic pressures have threatened both their cultural heritage and ecological balance. This paper explores how the integration of TEK into formal education can promote sustainable development in Tripura. By examining traditional practices such as jhum cultivation, biodiversity conservation, and medicinal plant use, the paper highlights the potential of TEK-based education to empower communities, preserve indigenous knowledge, and foster ecological resilience.
