Abstract
The growth pole theory which is related to urban development is the main mechanism and themes in the subject of Regional Planning and Development. In the modern economy, the urban growth center plays an important driving force in developing any region and raising the economic status of the people by offering various and series of opportunities for the livelihood of the tribal society. In this context, the assessment of urban composition and urbanization rate of Scheduled tribes becomes the main crux of the study. The latest urban composition of the tribes of Tripura is hardly 2 % of the total population of Tripura. The extent of urbanization of the tribal societies and urban composition is extremely small as they are predominantly rural-based with their strong roots in forest economy and dependence on subsistence agriculture. The assessments on the urban composition of ST of Tripura are being compared and assessed at the level of North-East, State and Districts and in Cities and towns of Tripura to get their vivid picture in the map of urbanization. This paper has also examined the role of the State and its administrative functions of Sixth scheduled areas, regarding their initiatives being taken and the drawbacks in urbanizing of the scheduled tribes of Tripura. The general observation of the shifting trend of the tribal and their nature of embracing urban culture are being identified out. The concept of town building and policies for increasing the urbanization rate of Scheduled tribes of Tripura are being strategically discussed and explained out for the betterment of the urban welfare of the tribes.
